Awarded to the Local Authority whose approach and innovation has allowed them within the last 2 years to develop through collaborative work, a project or scheme that delivers measurable and sustainable benefits to the community and the authority, particularly in the area of efficiency savings or an invest to save approach.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Details of approach to noteworthy innovation and demonstration of best practice
  • The challenges met and obstacles overcome
  • The impact of the activity on the community locally or at large
  • The approach taken to demonstrate a good degree of collaborative working and stakeholder engagement
  • The tangible long term benefits of the project/scheme

HSOG Highway Worker (or Operative) & Site Safety Initiative Award

Sponsored by: PEEK
Awarded for a new initiative, development or scheme to raise awareness of the dangers faced by personnel whilst working in the highways environment.  This can be achieved through new technology and / or worker / driver education and training to demonstrate improved health & safety awareness.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Impact of initiative on safety during previous 18 months
  • Originality and aims of initiative and outcomes
  • The role of the initiative within the company / authority corporate health & safety management policy
  • Engagement of all stakeholders - including site staff, contractors & road users

Highway Partnership Award

Awarded to the Organisation or Highway Authority that has driven or can demonstrate a collaborative approach designed to raise benefits for society.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Objectives of the partnership and how they have been measured to ensure delivery
  • Benefits to the partnership in terms of improvements, both in performance and in financial terms
  • Approach taken to development of the partnership working
  • Details of any obstacles overcome and methods used to identify achievements required and the deliverable timescale
  • Consideration given to the improved sustainability outcomes as a result of the partnership

Road Marking Project of the Year

This award will recognize the effective use of road markings in either a highways project or scheme designed to address major safety or traffic congestion concerns. 
Projects must demonstrate how they led to either a reduction in accidents, injuries or fatalities or substantially improved journey time reliability.  They must have been completed within the last three years.
Products used within a project must demonstrate an innovative application to the use of road marking or a new product that could address safety or traffic congestion concerns.   They must be available for use at the time of entry to this award.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • The quality and objectives of the scheme or innovation of the product
  • Strong evidence of the safety benefits to the Highways Authority and road users
  • The standard of materials/products in terms of quality and value for money
  • Any client/supply chain partnership that contributed to the scheme or development of the product
  • Any sustainability impacts that can be considered

Open to ANY individual or team from the Highways Industry.  Awarded to an individual employee or team of employees who has/have demonstrated a significant personal and/or professional achievement within the public or private sector to improve/sustain the outputs or efforts of their organization, over and above their general working activities.

The Award will recognise innovative and professional achievement that addresses the Highways industry.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Aims and objectives of the scheme/project or product and the challenges met and obstacles overcome by the nominee
  • The nominee’s input that helped reach overall goals of the scheme/project/product and its development
  • Demonstration of the nominees efforts that led to improvements in the scheme/project/product. 
  • The actual/potential impact of the initiative and any perceived future benefits to the highways industry as a whole

Awarded to the Organisation whose vision, belief and determination has brought a product or service to the market that has initiated a “change of thought” approach or technique and how this might impact / influence the sustainability agenda and/or offer efficiency savings.  The product must been developed and made available for use in the highways industry within the last 3 years.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • At least 1 year’s demonstratable results in terms of maintenance and safety
  • The depth of innovation included in the development of the product, including the challenges met, and obstacles and difficulties overcome
  • Impact of the product, the contribution it makes towards the industry, its stakeholders & society.
  • Demonstrate consideration to environmental aspects
  • The quality of the product in terms of value for money and its success at meeting its objectives
  • Indication of partnership working, industry and/or stakeholder engagement in the development of the product

Award for Environmental Sustainability in the Highways Sector

Awarded to an Organisation, Highway Authority or Partnership that can demonstrate consideration of environmental issues within a project that improves sustainability in the highway environment such as: carbon footprint reduction; local environmental benefits; sustainable material use; reduction of Co2 emissions; community liaison and consultation.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Demonstrate an embedded approach to sustainability within the organisation or achievable benefit through an initiative or product
  • The tangible benefits of the initiative or product
  • Challenges met in developing the initiative or product
  • Impact and processes for measurement of the initiative or product in addressing sustainability outcomes

Road Safety Scheme or Project of the Year

Awarded to the scheme or project implemented before October 2011 (no size limit) where through innovation, design the use of relevant technology and enforcement has influenced a demonstrable reduction in road casualty statistics.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • An outline of the road safety issues that required addressing and the anticipated outcomes
  • Impact of the scheme on overall road safety in an area, city or town
  • Value for money or first year rate of return
  • Factors such as originality, innovative measures, difficulty and challenges overcome

Congestion Reduction Scheme of the Year

A permanent or temporary traffic management scheme where innovative thought, design, technology, change to driver attitude and behavior and/or enforcement resulted in improved traffic flow for all road users.  Scheme must have been completed within the 2 years prior to October 2011 to enable demonstration of performance.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Outline of problem addressed and approach to identifying the development of the solution
  • Quality outcomes of the scheme
  • Impact of the scheme on road users and the community
  • Any additional sustainability considerations

Major Project Award

Awarded to the team responsible for the successful delivery of a major project – i.e. bridge construction, highway widening, by-pass or junction improvements, establishment of a control centre or similar, taking into consideration time, costs, environmental impact, any consultation process and with an indication of satisfaction levels.  The project value needs to be above £5 million and should have been implemented within the 2 years prior to October 2011.

Judges will be evaluating:

  • Evidence of overall value of scheme
  • Innovative measures taken to achieve a particular goal or aim
  • The range of challenges identified and techniques used to overcome them
  • Quality and impact of project on stakeholders, and contribution to the wider community and travelling public
  • Overall environmental impact
